This week, we’re obsessed with Sonia Barcelona’s latest visual for her single “Violent Water,” set against a super stylized animated/live action silent film about a mermaid, a sailor, a message in a bottle, and an epic sea monster battle. The Las Vegas-based Indian/Filipina singer-songwriter first came onto our radar last year with her single “WHATEVER” and we’re loving her evolution in this new video.

“Violent Water is a labor of love that was Kickstarter funded by the Las Vegas community,” Sonia says. “It started with an idea I formed with some amazing filmmakers (Director Danny Chandia & Producer Rachel Johnson) to make my song “Violent Water” into a magical adventure/fantasy music video. I had never worked with such dedicated and organized people before and had so much fun doing it. Rachel & Danny’s love of the silent film era was very much an influence on the video, with references from George Melies &  Ferdinand Zecca. And my love of bands from the 90s, like Smashing Pumpkins (who we also referenced music video ‘Tonight Tonight’), Hole, Veruca Salt, Garbage, can be heard in the music. Almost everything was hand-made, from the costumes (designed by Rachel) to the sea monster (molded from clay by Danny). Actors were green-screened out and added to backdrops which were hand painted by a wonderful Vegas artist, Matt Murphy. In total, there were 23 extras, all of which are actively a part of the Vegas art community. It was an amazing achievement that could not have been possible without the support of those who funded the project.”
